Named by TakePart.com as one of “10 Education Documentaries You Don’t Want to Miss”, “Race to Nowhere” brings communities together to spark dialogue and galvanize change in America’s schools.
Featuring the heartbreaking stories of students across the country who have been pushed to the brink by over-scheduling, over-testing and the relentless pressure to achieve, “Race to Nowhere” points to a silent epidemic in our schools. Through the testimony of educators, parents and education experts, it reveals an education system in which cheating has become commonplace; students have become disengaged; stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant; and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
“Race to Nowhere” has become the centerpiece of a nationwide, grassroots movement for the transformation of education.
Anyone with questions about the proposed rezoning of Dixiedale Farms to allow townhouses is invited to a 'Coffee with a Committeeman' to discuss the issue on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Fairmount Country Store.
Committeeman Michael Kelly will be at the Fairmount Country Store at 10 a.m., and will stay until noon or as long as anyone has questions. The 30-acre Dixiedale Farms is located between Hillside Avenue and River Road, across from the Chatham Glen townhouses. The property is zoned for approximately 17 single-family homes. The developer, Sterling/Sun Homes, has asked the township to rezone the property to allow 54 luxury townhomes. A formal public hearing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m.
before the Township Committee considers final adoption of the rezoning ordinance.
The retaining wall that forms the deep end of Colony Pool was noted to be deteriorating and in need of replacement. In addition, significant settlement was also noted in the concrete deck above the wall. The Township Committee elected to replace the wall and decking following the 2016 swim season. The project was publicly bid and awarded to PM Construction. The wall to be replaced has been demolished and the debris removed from the property. The reconstruction of a replacement wall is underway. Work will progress as weather permits. Appropriate additives and care will be undertaken for any concrete pours in cold weather. The work is scheduled to be completed in early spring 2017 before the Colony Pool swimming season begins.
The Chatham Emergency Squad (CES) will again host a blood drive on Saturday, December 2 at the Chatham Emergency Squad at 31 N. Passaic Avenue in Chatham. The hours of donation will be from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. We invite the community to stop by and support the blood drive with a donation. There is a constant scarcity of blood. Less than 5% of the population donates. Please try to donate on December 2nd.
Donors, ages 17-76, should be in good health and have some form of identification with them. Teenagers, age 16 can also donate with parental permission; forms for this will be available at the site. Anyone with questions about donating can call the blood center at 800-688-0900.
